Rock pooling

Nets, buckets, and whatever the tide left behind.

  • Out & about
  • Half a day
  • Active
  • Low cost
  • Ages 3–14

What you need

  • Nets
  • A clear bucket
  • Grippy shoes
  • Tide times

How to run it

  1. Check the tide before you go — a falling tide is best.
  2. Look under and beside rocks, not just in the open.
  3. Return everything where you found it.

Making it work for every age

Younger children: Carrying the bucket and looking at what the others catch is the whole job.

Older children: They identify the finds with a guide and record them properly before releasing.

Keep it safe

Check tide times, watch for slippery rocks, and never turn your back on the sea.
