Plant something together

Seeds in pots on a windowsill — the payoff arrives for weeks.

  • Outdoors
  • About an hour
  • Calm
  • Low cost
  • Ages 3–12

What you need

  • Pots
  • Compost
  • Fast seeds like cress, beans or sunflowers

How to run it

  1. Fill the pots and firm the compost.
  2. One seed type per child, labelled with their name.
  3. Water and put on a sunny sill.
  4. Photograph them weekly.

Making it work for every age

Younger children: Scooping compost with a trowel is the job. Mess is expected.

Older children: They run the watering schedule and keep a growth chart.

Keep it safe

Wash hands after handling compost.
