Cardboard city

Build a whole town from boxes — towers, roads, a river of blue paper.

What you need

  • Cardboard boxes
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Felt tips

How to run it

  1. Flatten and sort the boxes by size.
  2. Agree a layout on the floor — roads first, buildings after.
  3. Each child claims a district to design.
  4. Move the toys in and play.

Making it work for every age

Younger children: They post toy cars through doorways and colour the roads with chunky crayons.

Older children: Ask them to be the city planner: draw a map first, then add working doors, a lift or fairy-light street lamps.

Keep it safe

Older children do the cutting; keep scissors up high between turns.
